Why do you want this job?

Short answer

Connect three things: what the company or product is doing that you can verify, the specific problems this role owns, and the experience you bring to them. Generic praise of the company does not count.

Interviewers use this to separate candidates who applied broadly from those who chose this role deliberately. The strongest answers show evidence of research and a clear mapping between the role's problems and your experience.

What to cover

  • Something concrete about the product, market or technical direction, with a reason it matters
  • The specific responsibilities in the job description that you want to grow into or deepen
  • A short proof point that you have done adjacent work successfully
  • What you expect to learn that you cannot learn in your current role

Be honest about the trade-off you are accepting. If the role is earlier-stage, say you want broader ownership and accept less process. If it is larger, say you want scale and specialisation. Interviewers trust candidates who can name what they are giving up.

Do not claim the company is changing the world or that you have always admired it unless you can point to a specific decision, product or piece of engineering that supports the claim.

Follow-ups you should expect

Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.

  1. 1What specifically about our product did you look at?
  2. 2What would make you leave this role after a year?
  3. 3Which part of the job description excites you least?
  4. 4What other kinds of roles are you considering?

Say it in the interview

I have been using the product for a while, and the recent move into self-serve onboarding is the kind of problem I want to work on. This role owns activation, which is where I have spent the last two years, and it also asks for experimentation infrastructure that my current team does not have. I am deliberately trading a narrower domain for a broader platform remit, and I am comfortable with that trade.

Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
