Behavioral · Stories with evidence
Tell me about a mistake you made in production.
Short answer
Own the change you made, describe how you detected and contained the impact, and explain the systemic fix. Interviewers want accountability plus the ability to operate calmly during an incident.
The interviewer expects mistakes; what they are testing is whether you can separate accountability from blame. A strong answer names your specific action, the blast radius, the mitigation and the prevention, without hiding behind process.
The sequence to cover
- What you changed and the assumption that was wrong
- How it was detected and how long the impact lasted
- What you did to stop the bleeding, including who you told and when
- The systemic fix, such as a guardrail, test or rollout change
Include the human side: how you communicated with support or affected users, and how you handled the post-incident review. A blameless review does not mean the author avoids accountability; it means the focus is on conditions and controls rather than punishment.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1How quickly did you know something was wrong?
- 2Who did you tell, and what did you say?
- 3What guardrail exists now that did not exist before?
- 4How did the post-incident review go?
Say it in the interview
I deployed a config change that disabled a cache for one region, assuming the fallback was warm. It was not, and database load spiked for about twenty minutes. I rolled back on the latency alert, posted the timeline in the incident channel, and gave support a short script for affected users. The review led to a config lint rule that rejects cache-disabling changes without an override, and it has caught two similar changes since.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
