How do you handle receiving feedback?
Short answer
Listen without defending, ask for a specific example, separate the signal from the delivery, and say what you will change. Then report back on the change so the feedback loop closes.
Interviewers are checking whether you can hear criticism without treating it as an attack. The tell is whether you ask clarifying questions or immediately explain why the feedback is wrong.
A practical response pattern
- Thank the person and ask for a concrete example rather than a general label
- Paraphrase what you heard to confirm you understood it
- Ask what a better behaviour would have looked like in that moment
- Commit to one change and follow up later with what happened
Not all feedback is accurate, and agreeing with everything is not the goal. If you think the feedback is wrong, ask for more examples and check with a second person. Disagreement is fine when it is curious rather than defensive.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1Tell me about feedback that was hard to hear.
- 2What feedback have you received more than once?
- 3What did you do when you disagreed with the feedback?
- 4How do you make it easy for people to give you feedback?
Say it in the interview
I try to separate the signal from how it lands. When a teammate said I was shutting down discussion in design reviews, my first instinct was to explain, but I asked for an example instead, and he described me answering before others finished. That was fair, so I started writing my opinion down and speaking last. A month later he told me the reviews felt different, and I now ask the quietest person first by default.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
