How do you handle criticism of your work?
Short answer
Treat criticism of the work as information about the work, not a verdict on you. Ask what problem the critic sees, decide what to act on, and explain your reasoning when you disagree.
Criticism of work is routine in engineering, from code review to design pushback. The interviewer is looking for whether you can stay curious, separate taste from correctness, and avoid either collapsing or becoming defensive.
What good handling looks like
- Restate the concern in your own words to confirm understanding
- Separate factual defects from stylistic preferences
- Ask what evidence would settle a disagreement
- Decide explicitly what you will change and what you will not
You are allowed to disagree. The failure mode is silent compliance followed by resentment, or arguing every point to protect your original design. State your reasoning once, listen, and then commit to a decision path.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1Tell me about criticism you strongly disagreed with.
- 2How do you tell the difference between taste and correctness?
- 3What criticism of your work has been most useful?
- 4How do you keep a review from becoming personal?
Say it in the interview
I try to make it about the artefact. When a reviewer called my API design inconsistent, I asked which callers it would confuse and we found two that would break, so I changed it. On a different comment about naming, I explained the domain term and we kept it. The useful habit is deciding which bucket a comment belongs to instead of reacting to the tone, which has made my reviews faster and less emotional.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
