How do you recognise and handle burnout?
Short answer
Name the early signals, such as cynicism, shrinking recovery and declining quality, and treat them as system problems as well as personal ones. Handle it with workload changes, boundaries and honest conversation.
Interviewers ask this to see whether you are self-aware and whether you would notice it in a team. Burnout is not solved by a holiday alone; it usually requires changing the conditions that caused it.
Signals and responses
- Early signals: dreading routine work, irritability, sleep changes, slipping quality
- Short-term: reduce load, protect recovery time, delegate or defer non-critical work
- Structural: fix staffing, on-call frequency, unclear priorities or unrealistic deadlines
- Conversation: tell your manager what is happening and propose a specific change
Distinguish a hard sprint from chronic depletion. Short bursts are normal; months of low recovery are not. The difference is whether the pressure has a visible end and whether you can influence it.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1What did you change, and did it work?
- 2How would you spot burnout in a teammate?
- 3What would you say to a manager who dismissed it?
- 4How do you protect recovery during on-call weeks?
Say it in the interview
For me the first sign is that I stop caring about quality and start watching the clock, which is not how I normally work. During a long incident-heavy period I noticed I was snapping in reviews, so I told my manager and we reduced my on-call frequency, deferred a non-critical project and took a proper break. The bigger fix was changing the rotation so nobody was primary two weeks in a row. That was a team condition, not just my willpower.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
