What is your greatest weakness?
Short answer
Name a real weakness that is not central to the role, explain the concrete impact it has had, and describe the system you now use to manage it. Avoid disguised strengths and fake humility.
The interviewer is checking self-awareness and whether you can improve without being told. The answer fails when the weakness is a humblebrag, such as working too hard, or when it is fatal to the role, such as poor attention to detail for a security position.
What a real answer contains
- A specific behaviour, not a personality label
- A concrete example of the impact, including who noticed
- The correction you put in place, with evidence it is working
- An honest limit: the trait is managed, not eliminated
Choose something two levels removed from the core requirement. A backend engineer can admit to weak visual design polish. A manager can admit to impatience during deep technical design. The weakness should cost something real without predicting failure in this job.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1What feedback have you received about it recently?
- 2What would happen if you did not manage it?
- 3How would I see this weakness in your first month?
- 4What weakness would your closest colleague name instead?
Say it in the interview
I tend to over-invest in written detail before sharing work, which has delayed feedback. On a design doc I spent an extra week polishing before review, and a reviewer found a wrong assumption on day one that would have saved that week. I now share a skeleton early with named open questions and a deadline for comments. It still takes effort to press send before I feel ready, but the last three docs got substantive feedback within two days.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
