Flutter · One codebase, native feel
How do you debug a Flutter issue efficiently?
Short answer
Reproduce with a minimal case, use the Flutter Inspector and DevTools, read the first exception rather than later cascades, and add structured logging around state transitions.
Flutter errors often cascade. A layout exception can trigger several follow-on messages, so the first stack trace is usually the useful one. The Inspector shows the widget tree, constraints and render objects. DevTools adds timeline, memory and network views that a print statement cannot replace.
void main() {
FlutterError.onError = (details) {
FlutterError.presentError(details);
CrashReporter.record(details.exception, details.stack);
};
runApp(const App());
}- Use debugPrint or a structured logger, not print, for throttled and searchable output
- Inspect constraints in the Inspector when layout overflows
- Check whether the error happens in debug only, profile only or release only
- Use breakpoints and the debugger rather than adding logs to hot paths
- Capture platform logs with adb logcat or the Xcode console for native crashes
A disciplined reproduction
I try to reduce the issue to the smallest widget or function that still fails. Then I confirm whether it is data, timing, layout or platform-specific. That prevents changing several things at once. After the fix, I add a test that fails on the old behaviour so the bug does not return.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1Why is the first exception usually the important one?
- 2How do you debug an issue that only happens in release?
- 3When would you use platform logs instead of Dart logs?
- 4How do you turn a bug fix into a regression test?
Say it in the interview
I start by reproducing the issue with the smallest possible case and reading the first exception, because later errors are often cascading noise. The Inspector and DevTools show constraints, rebuilds and frame timings that logs cannot. If it is platform-specific I go to logcat or the Xcode console. After fixing it I add a regression test and make sure logs do not leak sensitive data.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
