How do you build a highly available system in the cloud?

Short answer

Remove single points of failure by deploying across availability zones, health-checking and failing over automatically, and keeping app tiers stateless with replicated state. HA covers a zone, DR covers a region.

High availability is about continuing to serve traffic through component failures. It requires redundancy, detection and automatic failover. The design should identify every single point of failure, including the ones outside compute, such as DNS, NAT, a shared load balancer or a single database instance.

Patterns

  • Deploy stateless tiers across at least two AZs behind a load balancer
  • Use health checks and automatic replacement or failover
  • Replicate databases with managed multi-AZ failover or synchronous replicas
  • Externalise sessions and files so any instance can serve any request
  • Add graceful degradation, retries with jitter and circuit breakers
  • Remove cross-zone dependencies such as a single NAT gateway

  - maxSkew: 1
    topologyKey: topology.kubernetes.io/zone
    whenUnsatisfiable: ScheduleAnyway
    labelSelector:
      matchLabels:
        app: api
Spread pods across zones so one zone loss does not remove all replicas.

Failover must be tested. A standby that has never received traffic may have stale configuration, missing secrets or an untested DNS change. Game days and controlled failovers expose those gaps before a real incident does.

High availability is not backup. Replication copies mistakes quickly, and a bad deploy can take down every replica. Keep backups and a rollback path.

Follow-ups you should expect

Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.

  1. 1What single points of failure are easy to miss?
  2. 2How do you test failover without causing an incident?
  3. 3Why does statelessness matter for HA?
  4. 4How does HA differ from disaster recovery?

Say it in the interview

I remove single points of failure by spreading stateless tiers across availability zones behind a load balancer, replicating state and health-checking every dependency. I also look for hidden single points like a shared NAT gateway or an untested DNS failover. Then I test the failover path, because redundancy that has never been exercised is not really availability.

Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
