How does a CDN improve a cloud application?
Short answer
A CDN caches content at edge locations close to users, reducing latency and origin load. It is most effective for cacheable static assets, and needs careful cache keys and invalidation for dynamic content.
A CDN keeps copies of responses in points of presence near users. A cache hit is served from the edge; a miss goes to the origin and may be cached for next time. That cuts round-trip time and absorbs traffic spikes.
What to configure
- Cache-Control headers with explicit max-age and revalidation policy
- Cache keys that include the right query parameters and headers, and exclude irrelevant ones
- Origin shield or tiered caching to reduce repeated origin fetches
- Invalidation or versioned asset names for deploys
- Signed URLs or tokens for private content
Cache-Control: public, max-age=31536000, immutable
Content-Type: application/javascriptDynamic content can still benefit from a CDN through TLS termination, connection reuse and edge compute, but caching personalised responses requires care. A shared cache key that ignores the user or tenant can leak data between users.
Follow-ups you should expect

Say it in the interview
A CDN caches responses at edge locations, which reduces latency and origin load. I set explicit Cache-Control headers, use fingerprinted asset names for long-lived caching, and include only the right values in the cache key. For private or personalised content I use signed URLs and avoid shared caching, because a bad cache key can leak data.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
