What does HCP Terraform provide?

Short answer

HCP Terraform is HashiCorp's managed platform for remote runs, state, variables, policy and a private registry. It removes the need to build your own CI and state backend, at the cost of vendor coupling.

HCP Terraform, formerly Terraform Cloud, runs Terraform remotely and stores state for you. It connects to a VCS provider, queues runs, enforces policy and records who applied what. The CLI can still drive it through a cloud block.

hcl
terraform {
  cloud {
    organization = "acme"

    workspaces {
      name = "network-prod"
    }
  }
}
The cloud block links the working directory to a remote workspace. Authentication happens through terraform login or CI credentials.

What the platform adds

  • Remote runs with a consistent Terraform version and environment
  • Managed state, run history and state version rollback
  • VCS-driven plans and applies with approval gates
  • Sentinel policy enforcement and cost estimation
  • A private module registry and variable sets

The trade-off is another control plane and a dependency on a vendor. Teams with strong existing CI, custom networking or strict data-residency rules may prefer self-managed state and pipelines. Costs also scale with runs and users, so compare it with the engineering time of operating your own backend.

Sensitive variables can be marked sensitive in the workspace, but state still contains sensitive values. Restrict who can read state and run applies.

Follow-ups you should expect

Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.

  1. 1How does HCP Terraform differ from a self-managed S3 backend?
  2. 2What is the role of Sentinel in HCP Terraform?
  3. 3When would you avoid a managed Terraform platform?
  4. 4How does the CLI authenticate to HCP Terraform?

Say it in the interview

HCP Terraform is a managed platform that runs Terraform, stores state and adds VCS integration, approvals, policy and a private registry. I would choose it when the team does not want to operate a backend and CI pipeline, and when the workflow benefits from run history and Sentinel. The trade-off is vendor coupling and cost. I would avoid it when data residency or existing CI investment makes self-managed state a better fit.

Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
