Kubernetes · Orchestration under pressure
What does an Ingress do and what does it require?
Short answer
An Ingress declares HTTP and HTTPS routing rules for hostnames and paths. It does nothing without an ingress controller, which watches Ingress objects and configures a proxy or load balancer.
Ingress is an API object, not a proxy. You declare rules such as host api.example.com routing /v1 to one Service and /admin to another, plus TLS settings. An ingress controller such as NGINX, Traefik, Envoy or a cloud-native controller translates those rules into actual dataplane configuration.
- You must install and operate an ingress controller
- TLS certificates usually come from Secrets referenced by the Ingress
- Annotations are controller-specific and reduce portability
- Ingress is HTTP-focused; TCP and UDP need other mechanisms
- Gateway API is the newer, more expressive successor for many use cases

Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1What happens if no ingress controller is installed?
- 2How does TLS termination work with Ingress?
- 3Why can annotations hurt portability?
- 4When would you choose Gateway API over Ingress?
Say it in the interview
An Ingress is a declarative HTTP routing object, but it needs an ingress controller to do anything. The controller watches Ingress resources and configures a shared proxy with host, path and TLS rules. That sharing is efficient but creates cluster-wide blast radius, so I monitor and scale the controller like a production service. For new work I also evaluate Gateway API because it handles more routing cases cleanly.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
