Backend & Node.js · APIs, data and failure
What is Node.js and what makes it different from a browser runtime?
Short answer
Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine and libuv. It runs JavaScript outside the browser with access to the file system, network and OS, using an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model.
Node.js is not a language or a framework. It is a runtime that embeds V8 to execute JavaScript and adds platform APIs for files, sockets, processes and cryptography. libuv provides the event loop, thread pool and cross-platform I/O primitives underneath those APIs.
What it gives you
- Server-side JavaScript with a shared language across the stack
- Non-blocking I/O that handles many concurrent connections with few threads
- A large package ecosystem through npm
- Cross-platform access to the OS, streams, buffers and child processes
- One process model that can be scaled with clusters, workers or multiple machines
import { createServer } from "node:http";
const server = createServer((req, res) => {
res.writeHead(200, { "content-type": "application/json" });
res.end(JSON.stringify({ ok: true, path: req.url }));
});
server.listen(3000);The browser runtime is sandboxed around a document and a user. Node has no DOM and no window, but it can open sockets, read files and spawn processes. That power is why Node is common for APIs, tooling, real-time services and background jobs.
Follow-ups you should expect
Interviewers use these to check whether the first answer was understanding or memorisation.
- 1Is Node.js single-threaded?
- 2What role does libuv play?
- 3When would you not choose Node.js for a backend?
- 4How does the browser runtime differ from Node?
Say it in the interview
Node.js is a runtime, not a framework. It runs JavaScript on V8 and adds OS and network APIs through libuv, with a non-blocking I/O model. That makes it efficient for APIs and real-time services that spend most of their time waiting on the network or disk. It has no DOM, so the browser and Node share the language but not the platform APIs.
Use this as a model, not a script. Saying it in your own words is what makes it survive follow-up pressure.
